SocialContactApp · Fu Xin Co., Ltd. · Updated 2026-10-14

You can create a LINE OpenChat on your phone: open OpenChat from the Chats tab, tap Create, enter a name, set the profile image and nickname you will use in that OpenChat, and tap Done. The person who creates it becomes the admin, and anyone can join by default; you can change that later. According to the LINE Help Center, OpenChat is only available in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. The steps below follow the LINE Help Center pages for those countries.

Creating an OpenChat on a phone

  1. Open OpenChat. Where it is depends on your country's version of LINE: in Taiwan, tap "Chats" at the top of the Chats tab, then the icon; in Japan, tap "OpenChat" at the top of the Chats screen; in Thailand, open the OpenChat tab and tap the icon at the top right.
  2. Tap Create.
  3. Enter the OpenChat name and, if you like, a description, cover image, category, and whether it can be found in search.
  4. Tap Next.
  5. Set the profile image and nickname you will use in this OpenChat, then tap Done.
  6. Read the notes on using OpenChat and confirm.

An OpenChat that allows search appears in other users' search results. Menu names depend on the country and the app version.

Creating an OpenChat on Windows or Mac

  1. In the main menu, choose Create OpenChat (in the Japanese version it is under Add friends).
  2. Enter the name and, if you like, a description, cover image, category, and whether to allow search.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Set the profile image and nickname for this OpenChat, then click Done.
  5. Read the notes and confirm.

According to the LINE Help Center, OpenChat cannot be used in LINE for Chrome.

Where OpenChat is offered

According to the LINE Help Center (English), OpenChat is only available in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. The OpenChat entry also sits in a different place in each country's LINE app, so a tutorial written for another country may not match your screen.

Set these up after creating it

What happens if the admin's LINE account is deleted?

Admin rights move automatically:

  1. to the co-admin who has been in the OpenChat the longest;
  2. if there is no co-admin, to the member who has been in it the longest.

If no one else is in the OpenChat when the admin's LINE account is deleted, the OpenChat is deleted too.

OpenChat or group?

An OpenChat suits people who don't know each other, larger numbers, and joining through search or links; a regular group suits family, friends and small teams who already know each other. See LINE OpenChat vs LINE group: members, anonymity and joining compared. To give a new OpenChat its first members, see the LINE OpenChat member service; prices and quantities follow the service page.

FAQ

Q: How do I create a LINE OpenChat?

Yes, on Windows or Mac: choose Create OpenChat from the main menu. According to the LINE Help Center, OpenChat cannot be used in LINE for Chrome.

Q: If the admin deletes their LINE account, is the OpenChat deleted?

Not necessarily. Admin rights pass to the co-admin who has been there the longest, or, if there is none, to the longest-standing member. The OpenChat is deleted only if no one else is in it.
