How many co-admins can a LINE OpenChat have? Setup, permissions and admin transfer
SocialContactApp · Fu Xin Co., Ltd. · Updated 2026-10-13
A LINE OpenChat can have up to 100 co-admins. Once an OpenChat grows, one admin can hardly keep up with join approvals, rule-breaking messages and spam; sharing that work with co-admins also keeps the OpenChat in order when the admin is away. Here is how it works, based on LINE's official OpenChat guides.
Up to 100 co-admins
According to LINE's official admin guide, each OpenChat can register up to 100 co-admins. There is one admin (usually the person who created the OpenChat), and the admin picks co-admins from the members.
| Role | How many | Chosen by |
|---|---|---|
| Admin | 1 | The creator; can be transferred |
| Co-admin | Up to 100 | The admin, from the members |
| Member | Up to the member limit | — |
How to add or remove a co-admin
- Open the OpenChat and tap the menu (three lines) at the top right.
- Tap Settings (gear) > Manage members > Set co-admins.
- Tap Add next to the member.
To remove one, go to Manage members > Co-admins and tap Delete next to the name. Button names may differ slightly by LINE version and language.
Which permissions can co-admins have?
In the OpenChat settings under Permissions, the admin decides who can use each feature, choosing options such as Admin, Admin and co-admins, or All members. A common setup is to let co-admins handle join approvals and banned-word management so regular members cannot change things by mistake.
Treat co-admins as a backup: name at least one or two people you trust, so someone can handle approvals and violations when the admin is away.
Can the admin role be transferred? What if the admin is gone?
Yes. In Manage members, the admin chooses Transfer admin rights and picks a co-admin; the former admin then becomes a co-admin.
Also, under LINE's official OpenChat notice (2023-12-26), if LINE judges that an admin is ignoring safety-guideline violations, or that admin functions have been lost for a long time, LINE may move the admin rights to the co-admin who joined earliest, or, if there is none, to the member who joined earliest. LINE does not accept user requests to do this, so naming co-admins in advance is the safer choice.
Co-admins and sub-talk rooms
With sub-talk rooms, co-admins are shared across all rooms; you cannot set co-admins for one sub-talk room only. Joining settings such as public, approval and passcode are shared as well.
Share the work before the OpenChat grows
The more members, the more approvals, reports and spam to handle. A LINE OpenChat holds 5,000 members by default and 10,000 on request (see What is the LINE OpenChat member limit?); setting up co-admins and permissions before it grows makes running it much easier. FAQ
Q: How many admins can a LINE OpenChat have?
There is one admin, plus up to 100 co-admins.
Q: What can co-admins do?
It depends on what the admin chooses under Permissions in the OpenChat settings; join approvals and banned-word management are common. Transferring the admin role is done by the admin.
Q: What happens if the admin is gone?
When LINE judges that admin functions have been lost for a long time, it may move the admin rights to the earliest-joined co-admin or member (at least one must remain). LINE does not accept user requests for this, so name co-admins in advance and let the admin transfer the role when needed.
Q: Can I set co-admins for one sub-talk room only?
No. According to LINE, co-admins are shared across all rooms.
